Have your say: Maids, family life and spoilt kids Do you have a maid? Or can you and your family live without one? A few days ago Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew revealed how he stopped having domestic help seven years ago. His reason: His kids and even some adults in his household were relying too much on the maid to pick up after them. The Straits Times reported him as saying that having a maid "subverts the adult-child relationship". "When the child should be listening to the adult, it is the adult listening to the child." And, if maids do all the dirty work and most of the chores at home how can children develop self-reliance and all the traits that go with that? Are there kids out there who have never cleaned up, never cooked a meal from scratch, never washed their clothes or even made a bed? Or does having someone do routine cleaning and cooking just make family life easier and better in a hectic place like modern Singapore?
